In 1828 started the traffic on Linz-Budweis horse railway, the first public railway on the continent. A roadside inn in Holkov, adapted by the railway company into a station building, can be considered as the first railway station in what is now the Czech Republic. By means of historic as well as contemporary photographs and archive plans the author, a civil engineer and railway historian, presents a work of several generations of railway architects in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and indirectly also in the whole Austrian (since 1867 Austro-Hungarian) monarchy, to which these lands belonged untill 1918, also in the period when most of station buildings were built. Therefore, it is possible to find the station buildings of the same or similar design as in Czech lands also in other parts of former Austria-Hungary, i.e. in todays Austria, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Ukraine, Slovenia, Slovakia and Rumania. Due to large amount of material the contents of the book has been divided into six bands, in which the author documents the architectural history of station buildings built by particular railway companies, following according to the dates of opening their first railway lines on the Czech territory. Moreover, in the first band the overall construction and architectural development of station buildings is described. From bands:
